The Faculty hosted its 7th\u00a0Irene Manton Lecture in December, in partnership with the prestigious\u00a0Linnean Society of London<\/a>. The event was delivered online and streamed live via the\u00a0Faculty\u2019s Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n The lecture celebrates the significant contribution made by women to the Natural Sciences and is named after British botanist\u00a0Irene Manton<\/a>\u00a0who, as well as being the first female president of the Linnean Society, studied for her PhD here at the University.<\/p>\n This year\u2019s guest speaker was\u00a0Dr Kat Coyte<\/a>, Presidential Fellow (Research) at The University of Manchester. Kat\u2019s presentation\u00a0focused on how we can combine mathematics, big data and simple experiments to understand, and perhaps even manipulate, our own microbial communities, through her talk entitled \u2018Worlds within our Guts<\/strong>\u2018.<\/p>\n Commenting on the event Kat said: \u201cIt was such an honour to talk at the event tonight. It\u2019s actually a bit surreal as I attended a similar event when studying my A-levels and now I am the person giving the lecture.\u2019<\/p>\n The evening was a huge success with a varied audience watching live, including Linnean Society members, University colleagues, sixth form students from schools across the UK and members of the public.\u00a0It was particularly pleasing to see students engaging with the event during the Q&A session, as the lecture aims to inspire and inform those interested in a career in the Natural Sciences.<\/p>\n Professor Mahesh Nirmalan, Vice Dean for Social Responsibility and Public Engagement commented: \u201cKat gave an absolutely inspiring lecture, she spoke with clarity and authority and it was fascinating to hear about the integration between biology, computing, mathematics and philosophy.
