A weekend\u00a0defined by changing weather,\u00a0beautiful\u00a0scenery and science \u2013\u00a0\u00a0Trinity School\u2019s\u00a0year 10\u00a0pupils\u00a0are sure to remember their latest trip to FSC\u00a0(Field Studies Council)\u00a0Castlehead.<\/p>\n
Throughout the weekend, pupils were given a chance to conduct their own field\u00a0and lab\u00a0experiments while hearing from and engaging with students, researchers and clinicians throughout The Faculty of Biology Medicine and Health.<\/p>\n
Nestled\u00a0adjacent to the University, Trinity High School is a diverse\u00a0inner-city\u00a0school full of motivated and aspirational pupils, however most lack the opportunity to visit the countryside. Previous trips have taken\u00a0received\u00a0great feedback from students and staff alike.\u00a0This\u00a0year\u2019s\u00a0trip to FSC\u00a0Castlehead\u00a0was the first trip to run since the recent pandemic.\u00a0As a result, demand\u00a0for\u00a0the trip was high, and no wonder, backed by seaside and mountains,\u00a0Castlehead\u00a0is a stark contrast to\u00a0urban Manchester.<\/p>\n
Fifty\u00a0pupils began Friday evening by splitting into small groups and interacting with University staff and students, allowing\u00a0them to\u00a0learn about\u00a0working and studying\u00a0at the University. Pupils were also invited to raise any of their own questions and concerns regarding\u00a0university life and admission.<\/p>\n
The evening was\u00a0a huge success, one student commented that: \u201cIt was useful to get a deeper understanding of university as well as a chance to build your ideas on what you would like to do when you are older.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Saturday, students got stuck in with fieldwork.\u00a0Undeterred by unpredictable weather,\u00a0challenging terrain\u00a0(and pesky wasps),\u00a0pupils learnt\u00a0techniques such as plant identification, pond dipping and soil monitoring.\u00a0Later, students conducted lab work to support what they learnt in the field.<\/p>\n
After an\u00a0action-packed\u00a0day,\u00a0students\u00a0then\u00a0heard from Professor Dawn Edge, the University\u2019s first black female professor. Dawn\u00a0gave an\u00a0inspirational and motivational talk\u00a0about\u00a0her career journey, offering her insight and advice to the pupils of Trinity. The talk was met with enthusiastic applause from the pupils, one pupil said: \u201cI really enjoyed the talk from Dawn Edge, as it empowered me to pursue my passions even if I\u2019m not completely sure as to what might happen in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trips such as these are vital part of the University\u2019s Social Responsibility goal to inspire the next generation of doctors, scientists and healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n
