An ongoing initiative at the University is the\u00a0Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF)<\/a>, which helps labs reduce their environmental impact while improving research quality. LEAF awards Bronze, Silver, or\u00a0Gold accreditation are\u00a0based on progress across categories such as Equipment and Ventilation, which focus on actions like optimising energy use and improving airflow efficiency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n To tackle\u00a0energy\u00a0use head-on, the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH) has launched a new initiative: Plug Energy Meters available for loan. These devices allow lab users to\u00a0monitor\u00a0the energy consumption of individual equipment and\u00a0identify\u00a0opportunities to reduce waste.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n By providing visibility into energy hotspots,\u00a0<\/span>researchers can<\/span>\u00a0make informed decisions<\/span>\u00a0to reduce energy consumption<\/span>, whether\u00a0<\/span>that\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0switching off idle devices,\u00a0<\/span>upgrading o<\/span>utdate<\/span>d equipment, or se<\/span>lecting more energy-efficient alternatives\u00a0<\/span>for experimental protocols<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The\u00a0process is straightforward:\u00a0Lab users can\u00a0borrow PAC-tested plug meters to measure their lab\u2019s energy use\u00a0for\u00a0a period of time\u00a0from the below buildings\u00a0and then simply return them once they are done.\u00a0All you need to do is complete a\u00a0log book\u00a0so we know who has them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Energy meters are currently available for loan in:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n By raising awareness and enabling data-driven decisions, the campaign aims to:\u00a0<\/p>\n A strong example of how plug\u2011in energy meters can be used in practice comes from undergraduate student Gwyneth Darwent\u2019s final\u2011year project (2022\/23).
