The Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Forum plays an essential role in delivering\u00a0the\u00a0Faculty\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>PPIE Action Plan<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Social Responsibility (SR) Plan.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Together, these strategies\u00a0outline our commitment to driving positive environmental and social change for our local and global communities through our world-leading teaching,\u00a0learning\u00a0and research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Forum is\u00a0co-chaired\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>Dr Omolade Allen<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Mike Southworth<\/span><\/b><\/a>, bringing<\/span>\u00a0together Public Contributors (PCs), University\u00a0staff\u00a0and students, as well as\u00a0external stakeholders to discuss and shape the Faculty\u2019s PPIE priorities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The second Forum meeting of the 2025\/26 academic year was held online in March. Key topics of discussion included open research, PPIE payments\u00a0and the Civic and Community Engagement and Involvement (CCEI) Framework and Theory of Change (ToC).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The meeting began with a presentation from guest speaker\u00a0<\/span>Prof Ellen Poliakoff,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0senior lecturer in\u00a0psychology and neuroscience and co-director of the\u00a0<\/span>Body, Eyes and Movement (BEAM) Lab<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Ellen shared findings from her Open Research Fellowship, which explores PCs\u2019\u00a0perceptions\u00a0of open research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Survey results showed that certain open research practices, such as co-production, were more familiar to PCs than others,\u00a0including\u00a0pre-prints.\u00a0Encouragingly, over 70% of respondents expressed interest in further training, suggesting an overall positive\u00a0perception\u00a0of transparent,\u00a0accessible\u00a0and collaborative research practices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Forum members\u00a0<\/span>responded enthusiastically to the project and expressed interest in the open research training materials for PCs, which are currently being developed as part of the second stage of the fellowship. The discussion also\u00a0highlighted\u00a0considerations<\/span>\u00a0regarding\u00a0the\u00a0reliability and potential bias of the survey results, as well as\u00a0confidentiality concerns surrounding open research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Following the talk, FBMH Social Responsibility Project Officer Sam Franklin\u00a0provided\u00a0an update on the new PR20\u00a0payment system for reimbursing PCs.\u00a0<\/span>The system is currently in the pilot phase, with a\u00a0Faculty-wide rollout planned\u00a0for June.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0update\u00a0was well received among the Forum,\u00a0as\u00a0the new system would\u00a0provide a more streamlined and automated experiences\u00a0for\u00a0both\u00a0PCs and staff.\u00a0More\u00a0information\u00a0to follow on this.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Omolade then led a discussion on the CCEI framework and\u00a0ToC.\u00a0PCs\u00a0were keen on the idea of\u00a0establishing\u00a0an expert staff group of colleagues who can provide PPIE guidance and training across the\u00a0Faculty, but concerns\u00a0remain\u00a0regarding\u00a0staff\u00a0capacity\u00a0and time commitments.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Members welcomed the new\u00a0ToC,\u00a0<\/span>which sets out short-, medium- and long-term goals for CCEI within the Faculty and maps the inputs, activities, outputs,\u00a0outcomes\u00a0and impacts\u00a0required\u00a0to achieve them.
