Tucked away on the third floor of the Stopford Building is the\u00a0<\/span>Manchester Surgical Skills and Simulation Centre (MSSSC)<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0a\u00a0state-of-the-art\u00a0surgical theatre\u00a0that supports\u00a0training\u00a0for medical students, resident doctors, and even experienced surgeons.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Beyond its nine surgical stations, 30-seat seminar room and high-quality equipment, the centre also runs a sustainability initiative called\u00a0<\/span>RECLAIM<\/span><\/a>, which stands for Reuse Equipment and Consumables for Learning in Advanced Medical\u00a0Education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Also referred to as \u2018Box it, Don\u2019t Bin it!\u2019,\u00a0RECLAIM collects donated,\u00a0out-of-date\u00a0or unsuitable surgical items from\u00a0<\/span>Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT) hospitals<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and repurposes them for surgical training.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This initiative is driven by the\u00a0high levels\u00a0of waste generated by the medical industry,\u00a0and the recognition that instruments and consumables no longer suitable for patient use can still have significant educational value.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What began as a small-scale trial in 2023 is now an annual project at MSSSC.\u00a0With funding from\u00a0<\/span>Green Impact<\/span><\/a>, they were able to introduce\u00a0permanent\u00a0RECLAIM bins\u00a0in hospital surgical theatres and clinics,\u00a0allowing them to collect even more items for reuse.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the past two years, RECLAIM has received\u00a0<\/span>over \u00a359,000\u00a0<\/span><\/b>worth of donated items, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), blades, syringes, and other surgical instruments.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The impact and benefits of this\u00a0initiative\u00a0are undeniable.\u00a0Not\u00a0only is RECLAIM cutting on costs and training the future generation\u00a0of\u00a0healthcare professionals, but\u00a0it is\u00a0also helping reduce the NHS carbon footprint, 10% of which comes from medical equipment (<\/span>NHS England, 2022, p.14<\/span><\/a>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Following the success of RECLAIM, there is\u00a0growing\u00a0interest among the\u00a0Faculty\u00a0to\u00a0further\u00a0promote the initiative\u00a0and raise awareness of its impact.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Some suggestions include\u00a0establishing\u00a0additional\u00a0RECLAIM bins in clinical settings, advertising\u00a0the initiative\u00a0through platforms such as the\u00a0<\/span>UK Network for Sustainable Research (UKNSR)<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0evaluating\u00a0the carbon savings\u00a0associated with\u00a0the donated items.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These activities\u00a0could be\u00a0supported\u00a0through\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Quality and Evidence Personal Excellence Pathway (QEPEP)<\/span><\/a>, a mandatory\u00a0component\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span>MBChB Medicine course<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in FBMH.\u00a0During the pathway, students complete a Quality Improvement Project (QIP), which\u00a0aims to improve a specific aspect of healthcare or patient experience.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These projects can have a sustainability focus, known as Green QEPEPs.\u00a0Future projects\u00a0relating to RECLAIM could\u00a0offer\u00a0valuable opportunities for medical students to\u00a0engage with sustainability in practice, while contributing\u00a0to a more sustainable healthcare system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Contribute to the initiative by donating your hospital stock to MSSSC.
