The School of Health Sciences (SHS)\u00a0<\/span>Environmental Sustainability\u00a0(ES)\u00a0Champions Network<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0comprising\u00a0staff and students, runs events throughout the year to\u00a0help\u00a0staff and students live,\u00a0work\u00a0and study in\u00a0an eco-friendlier\u00a0way.\u00a0We also encourage\u00a0the\u00a0incorporation of environmental perspectives\u00a0into our\u00a0undergrad\u00a0and postgrad curriculums.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tree Stall with a tree identification game<\/p><\/div>\n

For the last five years we have held a welcome week stall with eco-giveaways of houseplants, kitchen herb plants, surplus university stationery, crockery and\u00a0even\u00a0some random\u00a0items like suit carriers,\u00a0hula\u00a0hoops\u00a0and\u00a0children\u2019s Roman togas!\u00a0Our stalls\u00a0also\u00a0advertise the student-run eco and refill shop\u00a0<\/span>Want not Waste<\/span><\/a>, the\u00a0University\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Furniture Reuse Station<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Tree Musketeers\u2019<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Botany Society<\/span><\/a>\u00a0student societies,\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>UoM Tree Trails<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>living walls<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>The Firs\u2019 Green Wellbeing Project<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our\u00a0stall visitors\u00a0are invited\u00a0to download our\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Easy Eco for All\u2019 booklet<\/span><\/a>\u00a0which shares practical ways to lead a green lifestyle\u00a0such as campus and high-street recycling facilities,\u00a0waste reduction,\u00a0repair cafes, eco-travel\u00a0and wildlife.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0hold stalls\u00a0and give talks\u00a0at the annual\u00a0<\/span>FBMH\u00a0Sustainability Showcase<\/span><\/a>, and help\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>FBMH eco-crafting events<\/span><\/a>, and have held a vegan sharers lunch.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0hold\u00a0engaging and interactive stalls at the annual\u00a0<\/span>Universally\u00a0Manchester\u00a0Festival.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0One stall\u00a0asked members of the public to think about how being in green spaces makes them feel, adding a leaf with their thoughts onto a sustainable homemade tree; people were also given the opportunity to experience a forest bathing experience using virtual reality!\u00a0Another\u00a0stall\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Trees for Life\u2019<\/span><\/a>\u00a0including origami plant pot-making, tree identification,\u00a0sapling\u00a0and seed\u00a0giveaways,\u00a0molymod\u00a0structures,\u00a0with\u00a0colouring in and tree\u00a0identification\u00a0sheet giveaways, using\u00a0both scientific and wildlife\u00a0perspectives.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have presented in the Educational Gains series\u00a0of talks\u00a0to students\u00a0on\u00a0extracurricular\u202fES\u00a0activities and opportunities in Manchester,\u00a0sustainable healthcare and planetary health,\u00a0and eco-related\u00a0pharmacy projects.\u00a0We have shared our eco-activities and ideas with other universities at conferences so we can learn from each other.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2024 SHS joined the\u00a0<\/span>Planetary Health Alliance<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0our commitment to embedding environmental sustainability into all aspects of our work and\u00a0opening up\u00a0doors to global collaboration and up to date resources to support our mission. Part of\u00a0that\u00a0mission is to weave environmental sustainability and planetary health into all SHS curricula \u2013 an audit of our curricula across the school completed last year, alongside use of the student-led\u00a0<\/span>Planetary Health Report Card<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0demonstrated several areas of strength and good practice, which we hope to\u00a0share and\u00a0become a model\u00a0to help all programmes within the school develop their teaching practices to include such content.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
