module_alignment=&#8221;left&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<div id=\"top\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph ng-attr-widget\"><span class=\"ng-directive ng-binding\">In mid-2021, a<\/span>\u00a0team at the Centre for Epidemiology Versus Arthritis started a qualitative research project called\u00a0<strong>Understanding personal shielding experiences: the voices of people living with arthritis and musculoskeletal disease<\/strong>\u00a0(\u2018COVID Voices\u2019) to explore the shielding experiences of people living with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.<\/p>\n<p>People living with arthritis and musculoskeletal disease were amongst those identified as \u201cclinically extremely vulnerable\u201d to COVID-19 by the NHS England. I needed a project to occupy myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Inspired by stunning glass garden sculptures I\u2019d seen I wanted to make flowers for my garden.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Taking a sheet of clear glass, a cutter and coloured powders I became absorbed cutting, colouring, fusing and shaping petals, petals and more petals!!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Many things can go wrong once you put glass into a kiln to fuse, so its always exciting to open the kiln to see the results. Suddenly this became the first thing I did most mornings, eager with anticipation.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Gradually pieces came together and the first of my flowers bloomed which I was jolly proud of.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>An hour in my craft room most days provided some much needed \u2018me\u2019 time.
