\u00a0<\/p>\n

With great sadness we announce that Dr Lyn Schumaker passed away on 29 June 2021 following a long illness.\u00a0\u00a0Lyn researched and wrote extensively on the history of anthropology and of medicine in Africa, including her book\u00a0Africanizing Anthropology: Fieldwork, Networks, and the Making of Cultural Knowledge in Central Africa<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Duke University Press, 2001). After her PhD in the History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania, she moved to the UK, and for many years was a valued member of the academic staff at our Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) at the University of Manchester.\u00a0\u00a0Lyn retired early due to illness, but continued to work with the\u00a0Journal of Southern African Studies<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in encouraging work by new scholars.\u00a0\u00a0We will remember Lyn as an insightful and dedicated researcher, a graceful writer, a committed teacher, and a generous mentor.<\/p>\n
