Northern Heart, Global Reach: Greater Manchester’s Humanitarian Impact, 3rd July 2025, University of Manchester
HCRI co-hosted a networking reception for humanitarian and human rights organisations headquartered in Greater Manchester. We are a proud member of the Global Manchester network, led by Mines Advisory Group (MAG).
Our guest speakers were Darren Cormack, CEO of MAG, Othman Moqbel, CEO of Action for Humanity, Nika Kokareva, Team Leader at MAG Ukraine, and Prof Duncan Ivison, Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester. Thank you for excellent chairing to Hannah Gladstone, Head of Communications at UK-Med.

Non-Communicable Diseases and Humanitarian Medicine: Current, Critical, and Historical Perspectives on Medical Treatments of Displaced Populations

Current and prospective students attended an online careers panel with HCRI alumni: Maddie Roberts (British Red Cross), Jack Garnett (Political Risk Consultant), Ellie Bamforth (Somerset Council), Kendall Spence (Chatham House) and Jasmine Mortimer (VoiceAbility).
Young People in Humanitarianism Conference (YPHC), 13th May 2025
HCRI hosted its annual YPHC, welcoming students from six local schools for a simulation exercise about disaster preparedness and response. Our guests participated in workshops about the role of the media, stakeholder responses, and post-disaster distribution of aid, in the context of a mock earthquake in the Manchester area. The YPHC was led and delivered by Dr Martin Parham and undergraduate / postgraduate HCRI students.

After the cuts: USAID, UK aid spending, and the future of the humanitarian sector (2nd May 2025)
A discussion about the recent dramatic changes to US & UK international aid spending and its implications for humanitarian work. Our speakers were Dr Jane Cocking OBE, former Humanitarian Director at Oxfam, and Damian Lilly, a consultant and former Deputy Head of Office at the United Nations OCHA.

HCRI hosted a pop-up exhibition of multimedia art and cultural outputs by students our Vital Mobilities module. Their creative and thought-provoking projects, inspired by their essay topics, offer fresh perspectives on mobility, climate change, and crisis.
