HCRI Deputy Director Professor Tony Redmond is to lead a government aid team in the Philippines, as part of the international response to Typhoon Haiyan which struck the islands and parts of north Vietnam on the 8th November. The UN reports that 11 million people may have been affected by the storm and official reports claim that 2000 people were killed, although this is believed to be a conservative figure.

Professor Redmond will lead a team of 12 medical and surgical specialists in the Philippines which will be providing immediate support in the areas of greatest need. Drawn from the UK International Emergency Trauma Register, their deployment was requested by the Department of Health who will guide their activity on the ground. Professor Redmond will be liasing with the Department of Health and NGOs operating the area to ensure a coordinated response. Further teams will be deployed if it is deemed necessary.

His team includes Dr. Amy Hughes, HCRI Lecturer in Emergency Response, who will be leading the team’s medical activity.
