My grandmother was a poor woman. However, my mother is not poor. She successfully cut the cycle of poverty from my family. Once I asked her. What made her able to do so? The answer is financial literacy. After my grandmother passed away, she had to fight alone to make a living. From day to day she saved money little by little. With those money, she was able to complete her school, became a teacher and significantly helped families escape poverty. With her support and guidance, I got multiple scholarships for my undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees. I have a chance to study abroad at The University of Manchester, something that my family would not have been able to afford otherwise. What is more, she inspired me to make a Ph.D research on financial literacy, to prove her story scientifically, that financial literacy is one way to end poverty.
