My daughter Katie is ensconced in her flat in Edinburgh, finishing off her architecture studies with the disappointment of not having a final year show. It feels very discomfiting not to be able to visit and give her a hug and tell her everything will be ok.

I started homeworking slightly earlier than most of you because I and my family had to self-isolate. So I have had a little more time to grow accustomed to a new way of working. Every day seems to be a mix of serious considerations about how to manage the impact of covid-19 alongside working out how to host a Zoom meeting or to put up my hand (electronically) to ask a question.

These last few weeks, particularly the last week or so, have undoubtedly been some of the most unusual and challenging of my entire career, and I am sure many of you feel the same way. These events are truly unprecedented, and moving at an astonishing pace.

Organisations like ours have business continuity plans for when unexpected events happen – but we don’t necessarily think that we will have to use them. Just a few weeks ago our lives were going on as normal, and now most of us are working in entirely different ways, limited to our homes and for many, balancing our work with other responsibilities such as home-schooling our children or caring for family and friends.

Each day brings something different at the moment – it feels like there’s now no such a thing as ‘normal’. We are facing constant shifts and changes to our lives and routines, and that can often cause stress and anxiety. If you feel you are struggling with balancing your work commitments and your caring or other responsibilities, please do speak with your manager to see what arrangements you can agree to help support you during this very difficult time. I read a fascinating article this week that talks about the emotions that are generated by a situation such as this one. It may interest you too: That Discomfort You’re Feeling Is Grief

The weeks to come will test us all. As a team we are all having to continually adapt our approach as the situation develops and changes. Please be assured that we are doing and will continue to do everything that we can for our students, our staff, and the long term future of our University. We will continue to communicate with you often in the weeks to come and share with you advice, resources and support for your wellbeing.

Thank you
I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the enormous efforts that have gone on across the entire University to meet the demands of this unique situation. Thank you for all that you’ve done and continue to do to keep our University operating through the most trying of circumstances. From the IT teams that have worked solidly to get working from home up and running at scale, the many staff who work directly with our students and have worked tirelessly to support them and their continued learning, to our communications teams who are working hard to share messages, this has been truly a team response.

I would especially like to acknowledge the commitment of those staff who continue to work on campus, to support and care for our students in halls, to keep our buildings and estate secure and to manage our special facilities such as the Biological Services Facility (BSF) and the vivarium in Manchester Museum. I know I speak for all of the Senior Leadership Team when I say that this makes me deeply proud to work here and truly brings our values to life. Thank you all. I’d also encourage you all to take time each day to thank those colleagues who you’re working with and who are all doing their very best amidst the most trying of circumstances.

We will keep communicating with you all as often as we can; whilst you might be working at home you are most definitely not alone. Over the coming days and weeks we’ll also share some ‘good news’ stories too – about how our people have really come together to set up new ways of doing things.

I have absolute trust that each of you will continue to do the best that you can. Please look after yourselves, your families and friends during this really difficult time. I would like to ask each of you to take every opportunity to keep connected with your colleagues as this is so important for wellbeing, and look out for each other.

I very much hope we will all be back soon on our fabulous campus. In the meantime, please stay safe and well.

Patrick

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_post_nav _builder_version=”3.17.6″ prev_text=”Previous” next_text=”Next” in_same_term=”off” locked=”on” /][et_pb_comments _builder_version=”3.17.6″ custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#ffffff” locked=”on” /][et_pb_text admin_label=”Related posts” _builder_version=”3.17.6″ locked=”on”]

Related

Related posts:

<a href="https://blogs.manchester.ac.uk/viewpoint/2020/02/13/becoming-digital-university-together/"class="relpost-block-single" >

Malcolm Whitehouse: Becoming a digital University together

<a href="https://blogs.manchester.ac.uk/viewpoint/2019/03/07/a-message-from-patrick-hackett-and-pslt-2/"class="relpost-block-single" >

Patrick Hackett: Using your big ideas and developing our future approach

<a href="https://blogs.manchester.ac.uk/viewpoint/2018/04/02/the-value-of-universities-to-society/"class="relpost-block-single" >

Nancy Rothwell: The value of universities to society

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″][et_pb_sidebar admin_label=”Subscribe” _builder_version=”3.17.6″ area=”et_pb_widget_area_3″ locked=”on” /][et_pb_sidebar _builder_version=”3.17.6″ area=”sidebar-1″ show_border=”off” locked=”on” /][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_section]

These last few weeks, particularly the last week or so, have undoubtedly been some of the most unusual and challenging of my entire career, and I am sure many of you feel the same way. I wanted to share my thoughts on this often contentious topic – and hear your views too.

Early in 2020 we will launch our University’s new vision and strategic plan – Our future. In order to fulfil Our future we need to ensure that we are in a financially sustainable position so that we have the funds to invest in the new staff, facilities and infrastructure which will be needed to bring our plans to life.

Our Financial Statements for 2018/19, which have been published following approval by the Board of Governors, confirm that more than 95% of our £1.1bn income is spent on our core goals - on our staff and our students - to deliver research, education and social responsibility; with the remainder invested in the long term sustainability of our University. You can find a summary of the Financial Statements on StaffNet.

However, this is a testing time for UK universities, due to the many external factors that have an impact on us - current home tuition fees are falling in real terms, whilst our costs (not just pay but non-pay too) are increasing. There are further and even greater tuition fee funding risks outlined in General Election manifestos as well as a range of Brexit-related risks that could affect our operations. The Office for Students (OfS) demands that we demonstrate both value for money for our students and our financial sustainability (in the sense of being able to invest to deliver our ambitious strategy, rather than survival). There are, of course, also ongoing unresolved national issues around pay and the continuing challenges around funding pensions in the higher education sector.

Our Financial Statements show an improved operating surplus (3.7% of income compared to £24.7m (2.3%) in 2017/18), with a rise in income from tuition fees, education contracts and research. As I mentioned earlier, we re-invest the surplus we achieve each year in activity in line with our strategy. Recently our funds have been used to create some new academic and Professional Services posts; to invest in key infrastructure including IT; to invest in some new buildings like our student accommodation at Unsworth Park; to improve the student experience by funding more full-time Residential Life staff and to upgrade a range of buildings and research and teaching spaces and resources. Increasingly it is also invested in environmental sustainability and meeting our ambitious carbon targets. So even when we are making difficult decisions in some parts of the University we continue to invest our surplus.

Whilst we have reported an operating surplus, our Board of Governors expects us to deliver a much larger surplus than this (at least 5%) if we are to be sustainable in the long-term.
Improving our financial performance will help to deliver our ambitious future plans, but we must also increase our capacity to create the funds and time to invest in our core goals. One of the ways we can do this is by changing what we do and how we do things.

Our strategic change programme (including IT Modernisation, the Student Experience Programme, and the Research Lifecycle Programme), alongside our continuous improvement plans, will ensure that we create the financial headroom to invest in people and facilities. The strategic change programme will also enable us to embrace new technologies and new ways of doing things that better support all our staff and students to be the best that they can be.

Yes, this means that some individual roles will change. New roles (some that we haven’t yet identified) will be created and some roles will no longer be required. I appreciate that this will cause some uncertainty and where that is the case we will do everything we can to support staff, but the alternative is that we never change anything. If we fail to take advantage of advances in technology and develop more joined-up ways of working we will ultimately find ourselves outdated in the eyes of future students, funders and other stakeholders. Staff want to work for a progressive and successful institution, of which they can be proud. This means we cannot stand still.

When I talk to staff and students I often hear their frustrations about how difficult it be can be to get some straightforward things done, grappling with paper-based, manual and repetitive processes, on outdated systems and infrastructure, all of which serves to increase staff workloads. Everyone wants to do a good job, but regularly feel that our world-class status is earned in spite of our internal systems and processes, not because of them.

To deliver our new vision and strategic plan we will need to embrace new opportunities and face challenges with courage and determination. That will sometimes mean we have to make tough decisions and no-one is claiming it will be easy or that mistakes will not be made along the way. But where we do have tough choices to make we will commit to implementing changes fairly and with compassion to support the wellbeing of all our colleagues.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_post_nav _builder_version="3.17.6" prev_text="Previous" next_text="Next" in_same_term="off" locked="on" /][et_pb_comments _builder_version="3.17.6" custom_button="on" button_text_color="#ffffff" locked="on" /][et_pb_text admin_label="Related posts" _builder_version="3.17.6" locked="on"]

Related

[related-posts-thumbnails]

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="1_3"][et_pb_sidebar admin_label="Subscribe" _builder_version="3.17.6" area="et_pb_widget_area_3" locked="on" /][et_pb_sidebar _builder_version="3.17.6" area="sidebar-1" show_border="off" locked="on" /][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_section]

[9,11

post-3245","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pslt","category-slt
["GET
