It’s certainly been the most challenging one that I’ve faced in my professional career. Global events have disproportionately impacted young people and students from widening participation backgrounds, and the gaps that already existed between the most and the least advantaged have been further compounded. However, in the midst of all these challenges, it’s been fantastic to see how quickly services and activities that support our widening participation work have been mobilised to provide continued support to students in the virtual environment. In addition, new and creative approaches have been developed, some of which I’m sure will remain a feature of how we continue to support students in the future.

This year’s Widening Participation Annual Report highlights the progress we are making, where we need to do better and puts a spotlight on some of the work taking place across our institution. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff, students, alumni, teachers and advisers and our partner organisations who contribute to our University’s widening participation work and for your determination during the last year to continue this work. Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to continue to support over 600 Year 12 students through the Manchester Access Programme, ensure that current students were supported financially through the Living Cost Support Fund or provide essential support to the children and families who would normally have attended our IntoUniversity academic support programme.

Impact of summer exams chaos
A major concern for widening access this year was around the summer examinations and the impact of the calculated grades on students in schools and colleges in the most disadvantaged areas, and in particular on those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. In response to this there was institutional agreement to prioritise widening participation students when admissions confirmation decisions were made. This action, together with the increased number of students participating in our Access Manchester initiatives, has meant we are on track to make good process against our ambition to reduce the gap between the proportion of students entering our University from the most and least advantaged backgrounds.

Our University also has a commitment to reducing the degree-awarding gap between groups of students and whilst the most recent data shows that progress is being made, we still have a way to go to achieve our targets and to better understand and address the causes of these gaps. Progress in this area will be supported through the work of our Institute for Teaching and Learning as well as targeted activities drawing on the expertise developed through our widening access work.

If we are to continue to improve outcomes for students where the biggest gaps persist, it is important that we do this collectively as an institution which includes raising awareness of the significant barriers that some students have overcome and will often continue to face. It also means changing the discourse from a deficit model focusing on what students lack, to celebrating the distance travelled and valuing the benefits of a diverse student body.

Iqra’s story
I’m going to end with one of my favourite parts of the report which is the case study of Iqra, who became involved in our University’s widening participation work when she was in secondary school through our Gateways Programme. Following this she joined and successfully completed the Manchester Access Programme and achieved her place at our University. After being an active Student Ambassador during her studies she started working at our University delivering activities to increase the participation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic students in higher education and at Manchester specifically. She has recently started her Master’s and will be part of our University’s Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador programme. This case study highlights the importance of having a sustained and student life-cycle approach to widening participation as well as being an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our students.

Read our report

You can read our report at:
Widening Participation Annual Report 2019/20

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_post_nav _builder_version=”3.17.6″ prev_text=”Previous” next_text=”Next” in_same_term=”off” locked=”on” /][et_pb_comments _builder_version=”3.17.6″ custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#ffffff” locked=”on” /][et_pb_text admin_label=”Related posts” _builder_version=”3.17.6″ locked=”on”]

Related

Related posts:

<a href="https://blogs.manchester.ac.uk/viewpoint/2022/07/27/race-equality-charter/"class="relpost-block-single" >

Banji Adewumi and Dawn Edge: the Race Equality Charter and our race equality journey

<a href="https://blogs.manchester.ac.uk/viewpoint/2023/10/18/the-will-wanes-while-waiting/"class="relpost-block-single" >

Banji Adewumi: The Will Wanes While Waiting

<a href="https://blogs.manchester.ac.uk/viewpoint/2024/06/27/why-our-chartermarks-and-awards-matter/"class="relpost-block-single" >

Dawn Edge, Jackie Carter and Rachel Cowen: Advancing equality for all - why our charter marks and aw...

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″][et_pb_sidebar admin_label=”Subscribe” _builder_version=”3.17.6″ area=”et_pb_widget_area_3″ locked=”on” /][et_pb_sidebar _builder_version=”3.17.6″ area=”sidebar-1″ show_border=”off” locked=”on” /][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_section]

Global events have disproportionately impacted young people from widening participation backgrounds. I wanted to share my thoughts on this often contentious topic – and hear your views too.

Early in 2020 we will launch our University’s new vision and strategic plan – Our future. In order to fulfil Our future we need to ensure that we are in a financially sustainable position so that we have the funds to invest in the new staff, facilities and infrastructure which will be needed to bring our plans to life.

Our Financial Statements for 2018/19, which have been published following approval by the Board of Governors, confirm that more than 95% of our £1.1bn income is spent on our core goals - on our staff and our students - to deliver research, education and social responsibility; with the remainder invested in the long term sustainability of our University. You can find a summary of the Financial Statements on StaffNet.

However, this is a testing time for UK universities, due to the many external factors that have an impact on us - current home tuition fees are falling in real terms, whilst our costs (not just pay but non-pay too) are increasing. There are further and even greater tuition fee funding risks outlined in General Election manifestos as well as a range of Brexit-related risks that could affect our operations. The Office for Students (OfS) demands that we demonstrate both value for money for our students and our financial sustainability (in the sense of being able to invest to deliver our ambitious strategy, rather than survival). There are, of course, also ongoing unresolved national issues around pay and the continuing challenges around funding pensions in the higher education sector.

Our Financial Statements show an improved operating surplus (3.7% of income compared to £24.7m (2.3%) in 2017/18), with a rise in income from tuition fees, education contracts and research. As I mentioned earlier, we re-invest the surplus we achieve each year in activity in line with our strategy. Recently our funds have been used to create some new academic and Professional Services posts; to invest in key infrastructure including IT; to invest in some new buildings like our student accommodation at Unsworth Park; to improve the student experience by funding more full-time Residential Life staff and to upgrade a range of buildings and research and teaching spaces and resources. Increasingly it is also invested in environmental sustainability and meeting our ambitious carbon targets. So even when we are making difficult decisions in some parts of the University we continue to invest our surplus.

Whilst we have reported an operating surplus, our Board of Governors expects us to deliver a much larger surplus than this (at least 5%) if we are to be sustainable in the long-term.
Improving our financial performance will help to deliver our ambitious future plans, but we must also increase our capacity to create the funds and time to invest in our core goals. One of the ways we can do this is by changing what we do and how we do things.

Our strategic change programme (including IT Modernisation, the Student Experience Programme, and the Research Lifecycle Programme), alongside our continuous improvement plans, will ensure that we create the financial headroom to invest in people and facilities. The strategic change programme will also enable us to embrace new technologies and new ways of doing things that better support all our staff and students to be the best that they can be.

Yes, this means that some individual roles will change. New roles (some that we haven’t yet identified) will be created and some roles will no longer be required. I appreciate that this will cause some uncertainty and where that is the case we will do everything we can to support staff, but the alternative is that we never change anything. If we fail to take advantage of advances in technology and develop more joined-up ways of working we will ultimately find ourselves outdated in the eyes of future students, funders and other stakeholders. Staff want to work for a progressive and successful institution, of which they can be proud. This means we cannot stand still.

When I talk to staff and students I often hear their frustrations about how difficult it be can be to get some straightforward things done, grappling with paper-based, manual and repetitive processes, on outdated systems and infrastructure, all of which serves to increase staff workloads. Everyone wants to do a good job, but regularly feel that our world-class status is earned in spite of our internal systems and processes, not because of them.

To deliver our new vision and strategic plan we will need to embrace new opportunities and face challenges with courage and determination. That will sometimes mean we have to make tough decisions and no-one is claiming it will be easy or that mistakes will not be made along the way. But where we do have tough choices to make we will commit to implementing changes fairly and with compassion to support the wellbeing of all our colleagues.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_post_nav _builder_version="3.17.6" prev_text="Previous" next_text="Next" in_same_term="off" locked="on" /][et_pb_comments _builder_version="3.17.6" custom_button="on" button_text_color="#ffffff" locked="on" /][et_pb_text admin_label="Related posts" _builder_version="3.17.6" locked="on"]

Related

[related-posts-thumbnails]

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column_inner][/et_pb_row_inner][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="1_3"][et_pb_sidebar admin_label="Subscribe" _builder_version="3.17.6" area="et_pb_widget_area_3" locked="on" /][et_pb_sidebar _builder_version="3.17.6" area="sidebar-1" show_border="off" locked="on" /][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_section]
[25

post-3332","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-edi
["GET
