Embracing Cultural Competence: A Mentor’s Perspective on the 2023 Dragon’s Den Workshop
As I reflect on my recent experience as a mentor in the 2023 Dragon’s Den Cultural Competence Workshop, I am truly honored to have had the privilege to participate in this enriching event. This workshop provided an invaluable platform for international students to explore and embrace the concept of cultural competence. I’d like to take a moment to share my insights and observations from this enlightening journey.
The workshop started with a well-structured agenda, where six mentees, all international students, were thoughtfully grouped with two mentors. The opening session featured a captivating mini-lecture by Dr. Harsha Parmar, setting the perfect tone for the entire workshop. Dr. Parmar’s presentation elucidated the concept of “cultural competence” in a relatable way, using real-life examples to shed light on common stereotypes that may be encountered in our daily lives. Her insights were helpful for us to understand the importance of developing the skills required to embrace cultural diversity.
This workshop is also meticulously pre-planned and well-organised. It ensured that mentors received thorough training to understand our roles and tasks. This approach also facilitated the bonding between the mentors, allowing us to build relationships and enhance teamwork before the mentoring sessions commenced.
Each of the three workshops had well-defined objectives, progressively delving into various aspects of cultural competence. The sessions ranged from self-introductions to exploring cultural diversity within the healthcare system. Role-play exercises provided mentees with the opportunity to demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge and begin integrating cultural competence into their conversations, consultations, and thoughts.
A standout feature of the workshop was the clear listing of discussion topics and guidance provided for each session. This ensured that mentees never felt lost or struggled for conversation topics. It also empowered mentors to introduce specific subjects for discussion, encouraging mentees to express themselves openly.
What truly made this event exceptional was the chance it offered to international students who might not have previously encountered such diverse cultural experiences back in their home countries. Just as I learned about the fascinating facts of cultural diversity in the UK, mentors are also from various backgrounds, spanning Asia, the Middle East, India, and even second-generation individuals born in the UK. This diversity enabled us to explore different dimensions of ethnicity and cultural origins. Through this event, we were encouraged to break free from stereotypes, embrace various perspectives, and understand that there is no single correct answer. By actively engaging in interactions and exchanges, we all became more enlightened and inclusive. Additionally, it broadened our horizons and fostered a deeper appreciation for the importance of cultural competence.
In closing, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Professor Li-Chia Chen and Ms. Selena Tai for their dedicated efforts in making this workshop a reality. I’d also like to extend my appreciation to the tireless behind-the-scenes team members who ensured that international students felt the warmth and care throughout the workshop. I wholeheartedly recommend the Dragon’s Den Cultural Competence Workshop to all international students planning to study at the University of Manchester. It’s an opportunity to not only learn but also grow and thrive in an environment that celebrates diversity and cultural competence!
