BEAM lab members enjoyed 2 days at the Open Research conference held at The University of Manchester. Ellen presented her findings from her Open Research Fellowship, describing the views and experiences of public contributors on Open Research.

Masters student, Sam Newell commented:

“I really enjoyed my time attending the first day of the Open Research conference last week; it was great to build on my knowledge of the issues surrounding open and reproducible research touched on in my masters units, and learn about the steps the University and others in the academic community are taking to address these issues. Ellen’s presentation highlighted for me the need for patient and public contributors involvement in the open research process, I hope to apply this in any future research I undertake.”

PhD student Sam Dodds also found the conference valuable:

“Attending the Open Research Conference last week was really interesting and taught me so much about open research practices. Learning even more about the value and importance of these practices has certainly motivated me to ensure my research adheres to these too.

There were two standout moments: Ellen’s presentation on what public contributors with lived experience know and think about open research, and Dan Poole’s (a BEAM lab alumnus) presentation on the views of the autism community on research data sharing practices. I felt proud to be part of the BEAM lab who are committed to transparent and responsible research.

It was great learning more about The University of Manchester’s own commitment to open research. As a PhD student, it’s brilliant to know the Office for Open Research offers a lot of training and resources to support researchers.”
