STEM event: Stretford High School during British Science Week – 16th March 2022

The Technical Apprenticeship Programme took part in an engaging STEM outreach event at Stretford High School, a Local Authority Maintained Foundation school, non-selective, 11-16 School based in the selective Local Authority of Trafford. The event celebrating British Science Week, aimed at years 7-11, provided students in every year group an opportunity to speak with our apprentices, find out what working life is all about, and experience some of our demonstrations and workshops.

Our laboratory apprentices showcased some fun experiments involving flames and colour which grabbed many students’ attention, whilst engineering apprentices displayed items personally crafted and created during their apprenticeship. The older year groups had a huge interest in this area and were keen to discover how products are designed, drawn, and manufactured. There was also a lightweight drone demonstration, a show which everyone found mesmerising, especially the year 7’s.

Our presence was very well received and begins to breakdown the barrier between local schools and our university technical programme, demonstrating our desire to better reflect the local community in our recruitment.

Abdul Hamza, Science Teacher, and STEM Coordinator commented “The atmosphere today was buzzing as they kept talking about how amazing it was and they are already looking forward to next year”.

Attendees:
Apprentices: Lauren O’Hara, Alisha Quinn, Oliver Wallwork, Georgina Daniel, Joe Cook, Sam Davies, Thomas Sherratt
Staff: Michael Hughes
