With great sadness we announce that Dr Lyn Schumaker passed away on 29 June 2021 following a long illness.  Lyn researched and wrote extensively on the history of anthropology and of medicine in Africa, including her book Africanizing Anthropology: Fieldwork, Networks, and the Making of Cultural Knowledge in Central Africa (Duke University Press, 2001). After her PhD in the History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania, she moved to the UK, and for many years was a valued member of the academic staff at our Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) at the University of Manchester.  Lyn retired early due to illness, but continued to work with the Journal of Southern African Studies in encouraging work by new scholars.  We will remember Lyn as an insightful and dedicated researcher, a graceful writer, a committed teacher, and a generous mentor.

Services are still being arranged, but for more information as it becomes available, please contact Dr Elizabeth Toon (elizabeth.toon@manchester.ac.uk)
