Music for Parkinson’s

The Music for Parkinson’s concert held at the RNCM showcased a collaboration between individuals with Parkinson’s, composers, musicians and researchers to highlight the influence of music in movement and well-being. Michelle Philips from RNCM and BEAM Lab’s Ellen Poliakoff ran a workshop for composers and people with Parkinson’s in July 2024. Inspired by the lived experiences of those with Parkinson’s disease, the composers created new work. The concert featured this body of original works bought to life by pianist Yuanfan Yang. The compositions were then discussed by the pairs of composers and people with Parkinson’s who had worked together.

Musical highlights included Emily Howard’s Seven Ways to Move, depicting the fluidity of motion, and Amit Manna’s Dancing Like No One’s Watching conveyed the joy of unrestricted movement. Megan Steinberg’s Utsukată/Shanti explored contrasts in restlessness and peace, while Adam Gorb’s Deep Stimulation replicated the abrupt effects of Deep Brain Stimulation. Ella Laughton’s Nylad incorporated influences from Gershwin’s calming soundscapes, whilst Cee Haines’ Run, Jump illustrated the emotional effects of music for individuals with Parkinson’s. Finally, Always Look for the Flowers by Simon Knighton, inspired by the lived experience of Parkinson’s of Chris Jones, expressed tones of resilience and fortitude. It is hoped to use the music within future research, as well as sharing it more widely in the future.
