April 2025: Work experience in the BEAM lab

Sigrid Vermeulen a 17-year-old high school student from the Netherlands describes her week’s experience with BEAM lab’s Ellen Poliakoff.

On Tuesday, Louie and Sophie showed me around the BEAM lab. This was great as I learned how psychologists do research, what researchers have to focus on and how psychologists collect data. It was interesting to see how slight changes in movement and behaviour could mean a different result.

On Wednesday, we had an event where school pupils (aged 14-17) learned “what do psychological scientists do?”. For me, this was also interesting as I learned more about the different fields of psychology and collaboration beyond psychology.

I also had the opportunity to work with Erin who is the co-production officer for Autism@manchester. I helped with making posts for the social media platforms, which was very fun to do. It was fascinating to see what Autism@manchester does for people with autism and what is being researched.

I am very grateful for this opportunity, I learned a lot and know now I want to study psychology.
