See the Person Campaign – The Transgender Day of Visibility

31st March marks an important date in the University’s EDI calendar – the Transgender Day of Visibility.

Many of our colleagues, both within the PS and academia, might identify as transgender, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, and more. However, not all of them may feel comfortable explaining the complexities of their identity due to fear of being misunderstood.

To help create a more inclusive environment, it’s essential that we recognise and respect everyone’s gender identity. Understanding and using the correct pronouns eg. she/her or he/him, is a significant step toward fostering an environment of respect and understanding. Some of our gender non-conforming colleagues might use they/them pronouns or a mixture of pronouns (she/they). Some might even use unconventional pronouns such as ze/zir. Using these helps some colleagues reflect their identity that does not fit within the binary frame.

As part of the See the Person campaign, which is part of the wider SMS EDI Respect All initiative, we encourage everyone to share their pronouns in their email signature. This simple act can help create an environment where people feel safe and supported in expressing their identity, knowing that their colleagues respect their choices without judgment or assumption.

One of the easiest ways to support our colleagues and foster an inclusive atmosphere is by using the correct pronouns. To help explain why this is so important, we invite you to watch the short video: Let’s Talk About Pronouns. This video sheds light on the significance of using correct pronouns and the positive impact it can have on creating a more inclusive environment for everyone.

Why not add your preferred pronouns to your email signature or even a link to the above video.

Let’s work together to create a supportive space where every individual feels respected and valued. Small steps, like sharing pronouns, can make a big difference. Please see our dedicated SMS SharePoint space with frequently asked questions, useful resources and statements from our colleagues. This campaign has been created as part of the EDI Belonging Project in the School of Medical Sciences.

If you or someone you know are experiencing bullying, harassment or any form of improper treatment due to your gender identity, please consider reporting your circumstances to Report & Support.
