The Gender Award Gap: Invisibility of women in medical prize cultures

Abstract

The Gender Career Gap, the Gender Pay Gap, and the Gender Citation Gap are well-known phenomena in science and medicine, but what about the Gender Award Gap? This talk will discuss why so few women receive the top prizes in medicine.

Following a historical overview and some thoughts about “prize studies” as research topic, we wish to raise questions about how we can study awards as well as possible strategies to bridge the Gender Award Gap. How is excellence and prestige enacted, how defined and ultimately produced through prizes? How can we stimulate diversity among both nominees and the members of prize committees? What role does the biological age of the applicants versus the academic age play?

The members of the project ‘Gender Award Gap’ are Annegret Dreher, Viola Mambrey, Thorsten Halling, Adrian Loerbroks, Chantal Marazia, all based at the Centre for Health and Society, Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.
