The 12th International Congress of Egyptologists (ICE) was hosted in Cairo from November 2nd to November 9th 2019. The conference was organised by the Ministry of Antiquities and the International Association of Egyptologists.

Manchester Egyptology was well-represented. Both Dr Nicky Nielsen and newly appointed Dr Huw Twiston Davies gave papers, as did Dr Campbell Price, the Curator of Ancient Egypt and Sudan in the Manchester Museum.

Dr Huw Twiston Davies spoke about the Leiden University research project he is currently working on entitled ‘The Walking Dead at Saqqara’. Dr Twiston Davies’ talk focused on the transmission of texts – including excerpts from the Book of the Dead – at Saqqara during the New Kingdom.

Dr Nicky Nielsen spoke about his research into the archaeological remains from the site of Tell Nabasha in the northeastern Nile Delta focusing on the block statue of Merenptah found by Flinders Petrie at the site in 1886.

Dr Campbell Price presented an element of his PhD research focusing on the use of the block statue hieroglyph as a determinative during the New Kingdom and Late Period.

The congress was attended by 500 Egyptologists and also included the General Assembly of the International Association of Egyptologists during which the election of Dr Willeke Wendrich as President of the IAE was also announced.

We here at Manchester Egyptology would like to extend our gratitude to the Ministry of Antiquities, in particular His Excellency Dr Khaled el-Enany, Minister of Antiquities, for hosting this wonderful congress.
