Professor Nalin Thakkar Leads University of Manchester’s Social Responsibility Efforts in Kenya
The University of Manchester has launched its Africa Strategy with a visit to Kenya, reinforcing its commitment to equitable partnerships addressing global challenges. Leading the delegation was Professor Nalin Thakkar, Vice-President for Social Responsibility, ensuring the University’s engagement delivers tangible community benefits.
Professor Thakkar and a cross-faculty team visited key partners to explore projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The delegation included Professor Keith Brennan, Professor Samuel Hickey, and Professor Susanne Shultz.
A key focus is the University’s partnership with Kisii University, where discussions covered medical education, emergency medicine, and breast cancer screening. Professor Thakkar also attended an event with HE Simba Arati, Governor of Kisii County, to learn about a new cancer hospital.
The visit included Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital for discussions on genomics, cervical cancer, and mental health. The team also visited Kitengela to explore clean water access, air quality, and disease transmission.
Social responsibility is central to the University’s Africa Strategy. A major initiative is its collaboration with the Akiba Mashinani Trust (AMT) to combat food poverty by providing school meals.
Professor Thakkar said: “This visit reinforces our commitment to long-term, equitable partnerships that create real impact. Social responsibility is at the heart of what we do, and we learn so much from our Kenyan partners.”
The Africa Strategy strengthens The University of Manchester’s collaborations, driving sustainable development and improving lives as it moves into its third century.
