PPIE Award Winner 2024: Professor Dame Robina Shah and the Doubleday Centre for Patient Experience
In this blog series we will be featuring our award winners and highly commended recipients from the Faculty’s ‘Outstanding Contribution to PPIE’ awards. The awards showcase inspirational and outstanding commitment to PPIE that has made a positive difference to our community and highlights the amazing events, activities, people and groups from across the Faculty.
Our latest blog in this series features Professor Dame Robina Shah, Director of the Doubleday Centre for Patient Experience. The Doubleday Centre works to involve members of the public in the medical training of our future doctors at The University of Manchester. Dame Robina and the Centre were recognised as winners in the special bicentenary category at the 2024 PPIE Awards.
The Doubleday Centre for Patient Experience in the School of Medical Sciences stands as a testament to innovative educational reform in patient-centred care. Founded with a visionary aim to integrate patient partnerships directly into medical education, the Centre’s unique patient and public involvement model has transformed how future healthcare professionals are trained.
The innovative approach taken by the Doubleday Centre under Dame Robina’s leadership has significantly enhanced the MBChB (medical degree) programme in the School of Medical Sciences. The Centre excels in three core areas: patient partnerships, student engagement, and collaboration with other medical schools.
Through patient partnerships, the Centre integrates lived experiences, shaping a curriculum that nurtures compassionate, inclusive healthcare professionals. Its student engagement initiatives, like the Doubleday Conversation Series and dedicated student society, enhance intra-university collaboration and peer learning. Nationally and internationally, the Centre’s collaborative approach extends its impact, promoting patient-centred education across 43 medical schools. This tripartite model not only elevates local educational standards but also sets benchmarks globally, truly transforming medical education.
The Doubleday Centre ensures students receive a more patient-centred educational approach, which enables them to improve the care they provide to patients as a doctor. Patients and members of the public provide students with an enhanced understanding of day-to-day healthcare experiences while also improving the students’ learning experience.
The Doubleday Centre is leading the way in improvements to medical education and patient care and is a shining example of our faculty’s contribution to social responsibility and outstanding teaching.
