Egyptology at the University of Manchester has been taught in many different forms and formats through the years. In the early 20th century the noted Egyptologist Margaret Murray gave public lectures at the Manchester Museum. In the 1980s and 1990s, Egyptology was taught both as an evening school class, and a correspondent’s course. Since the 2000s, Egyptology has been taught online through the medium of distance learning – an innovative development which continues in the form of the Certificate in Egyptology, Diploma in Egyptology and the new Master of Arts in Egyptology – the first of its kind in the world.

But from the 2019/2020 semester, Egyptology will also be taught in a more ‘traditional’ setting. As Egyptology online moves from the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health to the Faculty of Humanities, a new face-to-face Egyptology course will be offered to the Undergraduate students in the Department of Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology and Egyptology: Introduction to the History and Culture of Pharaonic Egypt.

The course will be taught by Dr Nicky Nielsen and will be available to all second year students in CAHAE. More information about the course can be obtained during the CAHAE Course Fair on May 1st from 1-3:30 pm in the North Foyer of the Samuel Alexander Building.
