Dan Smith Joins HCRI
HCRI extends a warm welcome to Dan Smith OBE who will be joining the Institute in Jan 2014 as Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies. Dan will be teaching on our MA in Peacebuilding and will also work with us to develop a HCRI’s collaboration with International Alert.
Dan has been Secretary General of International Alert since 2003, a charity and NGO that is dedicated to preventing and ending violentconflict, and helping those directly affected by violence to build peaceful and stable lives. He was also Chairman of the UN Peacebuilding Fund’s Advisory Group in 2010-11, Director of the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (1993-2001), Director of the Transnational Institute, Amsterdam (1991-3) and Chairman of the Institute for War & Peace Reporting (1992-2006). He is the author of The State of the World Atlas, which is now into its ninth edition.
It’s not the first time that Dan has worked with HCRI. In January this year he gave a seminar as part of the institute’s 2012/13 speaker series, in which he looked at the flaws in the common understanding of peacebuilding that is often held by international donors.
