Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Forum March 2025 update
The Faculty’s Social Responsibility (SR) and Civic Engagement (CE) plan outlines our commitment to driving positive environmental and social change for our local and global communities through our world-leading teaching, learning and research. To support this, the patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) forum, chaired by Kay Gallacher, public contributor (PC), brings together PCs, University staff and students and external stakeholders to discuss and shape the Faculty’s PPIE priorities.
The third forum of the 2024-25 academic year was held online in March. Key points of discussion included the PPIE Quality Mark, the upcoming PPIE Celebration event and a SWOT analysis for PPIE.
The forum began with a presentation from Sam Franklin, FBMH Social Responsibility Project Officer. Sam, Kay and Hawys Williams (SRPE Manager) have created a digital version of the PPIE Quality Mark, enabling self-evaluation for PPIE activities. Sam gave a demonstration of the QM tool to the forum.
Members offered insightful feedback on the project, with many keen to ensure long-term impact across the University. The team intend to initially use the QM tool to assess the PPIE Forum itself – this will form the first case study to demonstrate the impact of the QM tool. The tool is due to be launched shortly, so watch this space!
The forum celebrated the success of the Faculty’s International Women’s Day event, which took place earlier in March. Attendees heard from Dr Claire Malone, who explored the systemic challenges in academia faced by disabled individuals and other marginalised groups in STEM, including women.
Forum members have begun their preparations for the Faculty’s annual PPIE Celebration event, which is scheduled for July. Members have chosen the theme of ‘Inclusive Voices’ for the event to uplift diverse perspectives in PPIE. The event will again include the ‘Outstanding Contribution to PPIE Awards’, which are now open for nominations.
Some members of the forum also attend the Fees and Payments Working Group alongside other staff at the University. Progress has been made in this area; the voucher system has been revised, and will look at the PR20 payments next.
The PPIE team are keen to evaluate the impact of PPIE initiatives across the Faculty. Within the forum, Hawys is leading a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) to provide space for self-evaluation and reflection. Members contributed to the SWOT analysis during the session, providing feedback and ideas for future impact.
