Breathing New Life into Ardwick: A Community-Led Green Revolution
What happens when world-class research meets the power of local collaboration?
In Ardwick, on the doorstep of the University, the answer is a transformative environmental project that’s turning heads and cleaning air.
The Ardwick Green Route, a collaboration between local residents and university researchers, has not only tackled pressing issues like air pollution and access to green space but also earned recognition at this year’s Making a Difference Awards for outstanding civic engagement.
The Ardwick Green Route is a visionary project aimed at combating air pollution in Ardwick, a neighbourhood adjacent to the University. Spearheaded by the local group Ardwick Climate Action (ACA), this initiative has seen researchers and community members unite to tackle air pollution and promote active travel.
The project has culminated in the creation of an interactive walking route designed to encourage eco-friendly travel. Along the route, vibrant signs, maps, and QR codes offer insights into Manchester’s local ecology and biodiversity, making every step an educational experience.
FBMH academic Professor Sheena Cruickshank has been at the forefront of the initiative. Through their research, Sheena and the team have provided evidence for the disproportionate impact of air pollution in Ardwick, demonstrating the need for real change.
Working hand-in-hand with local residents, the team has developed a series of wayfinders to guide people along safe walking routes through Ardwick and onto the University campus. This community-driven approach ensures that the solutions are both practical and embraced by those they serve.
The team’s dedication to local engagement was recognised at the University’s 2025 Making a Difference Awards, celebrating their outstanding commitment to the community.
The success of the Ardwick Green Route underscores the importance of listening to and collaborating with local communities in research and policy-making. Ardwick Climate Action has also partnered with Manchester Museum to host exhibitions and events that spotlight the Green Route and the broader issue of air pollution across Greater Manchester.
