How can we celebrate Christmas joyfully without costing the planet? The festive season has arrived, bringing lights, laughter and end of year celebrations across campus. It is a time many of us look forward to, but it also can bring a surge in waste and excess consumption. We encourage colleagues across the University to consider a few simple, practical steps that can make this Christmas more sustainable!

1. Reuse, Upcycle, and Make Your Own Decorations

Before buying new decorations, take a moment to see what can be reused from previous years. Baubles, garlands, and table pieces can be refreshed with a quick clean or creative upcycle. Making your own decorations is not only sustainable but also a great way to bring teams and friends together.

At our recent Winter Warm-Up craft session, colleagues made their own wreaths, cards and festive decorations using sustainable materials and recycled supplies. This enjoyable afternoon, accompanied by a sing-along choir and refreshments showed how simple it can be to create decor without relying on new, shop-bought items.

2. Choose Second-Hand or Sustainable Gifts

If you’re joining a Secret Santa, consider pre-loved items from charity shops, thrift stores, or platforms like Vinted. These gifts are unique, thoughtful, and support local causes. Manchester boasts a wealth of charity shops and second-hand stores, making it easy to find something special while shopping sustainably.

3. Use Campus Recycling Areas

As offices clear out and celebrations wrap up, our recycling areas on campus becomes more important than ever. Please use designated bins for paper, cardboard, cans, and plastics. Simple actions like flattening boxes, separating recyclables, and disposing of batteries safely, help reduce our environmental impact.

4. Switch to e-Cards and Digital Greetings

Christmas cards are a lovely tradition, but why not try e-cards or digital messages this year? This small change saves resources, reduces waste, and easily reaches colleagues working remotely.

5. Wrap Responsibly

Opt for recyclable wrapping paper and avoid foil or glittered designs, which can’t be recycled. Brown craft paper and string are elegant, eco-friendly alternatives that reduce waste and remember to remove the sticky tape before putting in the recycling bin.

6. Plan Travel Ahead

Holiday travel can increase carbon emissions, so choose public transport, car-share, or book trains early. If you’re organising festive events, consider venues accessible by walking, cycling or taking public transport to support sustainable travel habits.

Rethink the season, reduce the waste and make a positive impact. This Christmas, let’s show how small actions add up to meaningful change.
