FBMH Lecturer Wins International Award for Innovative Education Videos
Written by Samuel Hurley, Social Responsibility and Public Engagement Intern
Congratulations to Dr. Joanne Pennock, Senior Lecturer in the Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation, for receiving the prestigious JoVE (Journal of Visualised Experiments) Educator Innovation Award in October 2022.
The JoVE award celebrates researchers and librarians who have used STEM video in innovative ways to accelerate science education and research in their institutions and communities. Joanne’s hugely successful Daily Definition Challenge and series of animated videos were important for meeting engagement needs of a new and more diverse cohort of learners.
Commenting on her recent award, Joanne said: “I am delighted to receive the award and have the work I am passionate about recognized in this way. This incredibly generous award will give us a platform to publicise the project for wider dissemination and to further develop the resources.”
Joanne is a highly respected immunologist. Her research focuses on gut and skin inflammation, hoping to understand how host-pathogen interactions promote disease. She has previously been recognised for her contributions to teaching and learning, receiving the Immunology Teaching Excellence Award in 2019. Joanne has also set up two postgraduate immunology programmes, the Clinical Immunology pathway for the NHS Scientist Training Programme and the Clinical Immunology MSc.
Well done Joanne!
