Omolade Allen: Christmas as a Season for Everyone
From a Christian chaplaincy perspective, Christmas is often spoken about in religious language. Yet at its heart, Christmas carries meanings that reach far beyond Christianity alone. It speaks to something deeply human that many people, of all beliefs and none, recognise.
For Christians, Christmas marks the birth of Jesus, a story centred on welcome, humility and compassion. A child born not into comfort or power, but into ordinary, difficult circumstances. For those who are not Christians, this story can still be understood as a powerful reminder of dignity, care for the vulnerable and the belief that light can appear even in hard places.
December can feel joyful for some and heavy for others. It can highlight laughter, reunion and generosity. It can also sharpen loneliness, grief and financial pressure. From chaplaincy work, what becomes clear is that people do not need perfect words or perfect faith in this season. What they often need is kindness, time, and to be seen.
Christmas invites us all to slow down in a world that rarely lets us. It invites reflection on how we treat one another and how we care for ourselves. It asks us to make space for gentleness in a world that often rewards speed and strength.
Whether you celebrate Christmas for religious reasons, cultural reasons, or not at all, my hope is simple. That this season offers you moments of rest, honest connection, and peace in whatever form that takes for you.
You are not alone this Christmas. And you are welcome, just as you are.
