Editor of the edition writes:

This month’s essayist, Alison Howell, has done extensive work with American colleagues on the psychological impact of war on returning vets, both in the U.S. and Canada. Her findings indicate that we are placing undue burdens on soldiers’ families, on the civilian healthcare system and on the notion of ‘resilience’, rather than insisting that the military itself take full responsibility for the care and rehabilitation of victims of PTSD and other psychological ills.By downplaying PTSD, our government makes soldiers and their families bear the costs of war.
